Our 2012 in objects

For the second year in a row, I’ve selected some of the objects and things we have that can represent our past year.

See our 2011 in objects here (and the Blurb book I made about it)

I love chronicling the meaning of the objects we choose to keep in our lives.

I believe in things.

I believe that your belongings DO have meaning beyond just their physical makeup.

And I believe those things deserve to be recorded.

This is NOT about materialism …. this is about valuing those things that actually have meaning.

Take a look below – and I’d love to hear what objects represent your 2012! Or check out Tell Its Story for ideas on how to document the objects in your life.

Our 2012 represented in objects:

(in no particular order)

2012objects 001

Big Bear:

We didn’t go on any real vacations this year (versus 2011 when we spent a week in Alaska and a week in Scotland). But we were able to schedule a really quick weekend trip to Big Bear. One of the fantastic things about living in Southern California is there are so many great destinations nearby.

We didn’t do really anything on this weekend. It marks one of the only times in my life I have gone on ‘vacation’ without doing a ton of touristy things. We took long naps both days and read pages and chapters of our respective books. And then went to bed early.

I sometimes forget what it’s like to relax … but this weekend in Big Bear was certainly relaxing.

This is a small patch we bought while there – I still haven’t decided what I want to do with it :)

2012objects 002

Project Life:

This is the year I started truly memory keeping again.

I began my first Project Life album on my 30th birthday (April 2012). Since then I’ve spent all of … oh, $50 total on photo prints. Nothing on paper. And started collecting a few little embellishments to use throughout the album (like the washi tape and Elise stamps pictured here).

I know I talk about this all the time. I’m sorry about that. But truly truly Project Life has done WONDERS for my memory keeping. I love the photos and the stories I’ve documented of the last 9 months. And I love that I’ve been able to do it with such a small time and product investment.

2012objects 003

Khaleesi and Fangsana:

My babies (my coworker calls them that and I’ve picked it up). We got our first pets this year! 2 darling little sister kittens in June.

Who are apparently very picky with their food and only like this one flavor.

It’s so different having to take care of other living creatures. Our whole lives changed this year. We now wake up early to feed them. We now have to make sure we don’t leave out little things (like bobby pins) for them to chew up. We sleep with warm heavy weight on our legs.

I love them.

Plus every single time I go to the grocery store I need to grab 12 or 18 cans of this!

2012objects 004

Schubert HQ:

Um. Yes. Big news.

We bought our first house this year! We closed mid-February. Moved in mid-March. And have been doing work on the house consistently since then.

Being homeowners is … such a change! We finally got all our belongings out of storage after 4 years (even though all the boxes are not yet unpacked). We get to make decisions for changes however we like (I got to had to design our kitchen from scratch).

And now we have a guest room (and lots of floor space) for family and friends to stay with us.

Owning a home (and paying for repairs) changes the way we spend our time. Owning a home also means I can now plan to quit my day job (since I don’t need that job history to qualify for a loan). So excited!

2012objects 005

Writing:

2012 was the year I really started what I’ve been thinking about for years.

I also started reading more of the writers’ memoirs and instructional books that I’ve been collecting.

I’m not saying 2012 was a HUGE year for my writing …. but it was a START.

2012objects 006

Home improvement:

Why, yes. That is toilet paper.

Totally emblematic of all of the home improvement (and headaches) we had to deal with in 2012.

Basically every single thing that could go wrong has gone wrong with this house. I think we have it settled now, but the very first weekend we lived there we had no kitchen, no gas (which means no hot water), the plumbing/sewer backed up into our downstairs tub and we discovered some of our windows leaked because it poured rain all weekend.

So, yea. Toilet paper? Just reminds me that we have tree roots growing into our pipes that have already cost us $1200 and will probably cost more in the future.

2012objects 007

Sugar free:

I have white sugar in the house that I haven’t used in …. I don’t really know when.

2012 was the year I significantly cut back on my sugar consumption – with an eye to quitting completely eventually. Haven’t had any sugar yet in 2013 :)

I haven’t put sugar in my coffee since the end of January – after 10+ years of sweetened coffee every single day (at least once).

It was ROUGH. ROUGH ROUGH. But remember last year when I included NyQuil in my ‘year in objects’ because I got so many head colds? NONE this year. Not a single one. I’m not saying it’s because of the sugar, but I really do feel so much healthier this year and there aren’t really any other changes I made.

I would 100% recommend trying it.

2012objects 008

Ghostbot Records:

2012 was Andrew’s first full year running his record label – and I could not be more proud of him. His freelance recording clients are really (really) taking off! He just recorded a song for a Fraggle Rock anniversary tribute album! He may be getting producing credit on an album released by a major label. And he’s just about to put out his 4th release on Ghostbot.

Other than a couple big things this year – our house and our kittens – 2012 has been low-key. But those big things have been totally life changing.

Balance, my friends.

Our 2011 in objects: printed BLURB book

Another PROJECT REVEAL!

I’ve recently put together a small Blurb book of our 2011 in objects. Last year I put together a blog post reflecting on our previous year as symbolized by some of the STUFF in our house.

When putting together the book, I simply pulled the text and the photos directly from that blog post, cleaned up the formatting a bit, and I had a lovely small hardback book capturing our 2011.

Blurb lets you use whatever fonts you have on your computer – so the titles in this book are Lobster 2.

I also created the photo grid for the front cover (Blurb lets you make whatever templates you like). Because all my photos have that blown-out white background, I used a white background on the book and the edges of the photos blend in pretty well.

2011Blurb 001

Book spine and back cover are simple white.

2011Blurb 002

2011Blurb 003

2011Blurb 004

2011Blurb 005

2011Blurb 006

Proud of this little book. Only 23 pages.

But a great little time capsule.

Have you made Blurb book recently?

Examples of documenting things in your life

election 001
I’ve seen some fun blog posts recently that tie in nicely with my ebook Tell Its Story. This ebook walks through the ideas behind material culture and the value of physical objects in our lives. Tell Its Story is half a discussion of what is important and meaningful in our lives … … and half a photography and craft project.

Ex: My current What’s in my Camera Bag? series is an exercise in telling the story of some of my belongings, specifically the pieces in my camera bag.

Telling stories of things around the web*:

I’ve posted a couple myself:

If you’re interested in Tell Its Story, check out more details here. We discuss real life examples (like music or your childhood homes) … and then go on to discuss specific techniques to record the stories of your objects.

The final chapter looks at 4 or 5 different projects you can make to help record the stories of your things – your heirlooms, your souvenirs, your every day objects.

*Note: To my knowledge none of these ladies have bought/read Tell Its Story -
which means this is just further evidence that having stories and
telling stories about your belongings and the inanimate objects around you is a universal thing.

Our 2011 in objects

My own twist on a 2011 round-up post…

Instead of photos or blog links that represent the past year, today I want to share with you our 2011 in objects.

You all know how I love chronicling the meaning of the objects we choose to keep in our lives.

I believe in things.

I believe that your belongings DO have meaning beyond just their physical makeup.

And I believe those things deserve to be recorded.

This is NOT about materialism …. this is about valuing those things that actually have meaning.

Take a look below – and I’d love to hear what objects represent your 2011!

Inspired by this article from Vanity Fair December 2011.

Our 2011 represented in objects:

(in no particular order)

Head colds

Oh my word, kids. I got so many head colds this year! Including on Christmas and on the 24-hour-day-of-travel from Scotland when every leg of our trip was delayed! I noticed something this year: I have been getting colds almost exclusively on days/long weekends when I know in advance I’m going to be off work. Even in March! I found out I was going to get Chinese New Year off (random benefit of my day job), and wouldn’t you know it? I woke up that Thursday with a head cold and had to call out sick the next day!

I think it’s a sign I need to quit my job :)   I think I am just working crazy amounts that my body just gives out when I get an extra day off. Like Christmas weekend.

So above, you see a box of Kleenex (necessary), NyQuil (heaven) and apple cider vinegar. I found this home remedy for sinus infections earlier this year and it has worked like a charm.

30 Days  of Lists

Back in January or February I got an email from Kam asking if I’d be interested in collaborating on this idea she had ….. What if we run a journaling challenge for list makers?

YES! Obviously, yes!

So for much of 2011 I’ve spent days and weeks and long weekends poring over 30 Days of Lists duties. Not only just helping come up with the list topics and posting the blog posts, but also all the marketing and infrastructure and tech troubleshooting and customer service and so much more. SO much of my 2011 has been consumed by 30 Days of Lists! It’s such a great memory from this year….

In this photo you see my #30Lists album. It’s a 6″x9″ 3 ring binder – I painted the blue and added the label and ribbon. Both my March 2011 and September 2011 lists are included in this.

Alaska

In June, Andrew and I went on an Alaskan cruise with his mother and sister. I had been on an Alaskan cruise previously (8 years ago), and enjoyed it so much I was excited to be able to take Andrew back and share it with him too.

We very much enjoyed this vacation …. PLENTY of time to read and nap and relax on the cruise ship, plus amazing natural sights on our days in port.

In the photo above is one of our souvenirs – a beer stein from the Skagway Brewing Company (Skagway was our final port in Alaska). It’s all cloudy because Andrew likes to keep it in the freezer.

Shooting weddings

I only shot 2 weddings in 2011. But both were incredibly special. One for a really good friend of ours. And one on my birthday.

I mean really, “working” on my birthday wasn’t even a consideration … I genuinely love shooting weddings, plus the bride and groom promised me a piece of cake, of course, AND Andrew came along as my assistant so we still got to spend the day together.

In this photo you can see my birthday gift from the bride and groom – such a sweet couple! The bride runs the etsy shop Pretty Perch and had handmade this brooch for me. They always were aware that I was working on my birthday for them and wanted to make sure to show their gratitude. Such a special wedding for me….

Scotland

In August of this year Andrew and I were lucky enough to get to go on ANOTHER big vacation (this one thanks to my parents and brother) – Scotland! We spent a week in Scotland with my parents and my brother and his girlfriend, going as far south as Edinburgh and as far north as Loch Ness.

It was MAGIC….

We try to always get souvenirs we will use …. so OF COURSE when we went to Scotland we brought home some Scottish whisky! Andrew had been reading Michael Jackson’s Complete Guide To Single Malt Scotch and learned all the differences between whisky around the country …. So interesting!

Andrew picked out a whisky from Edradour Distillery since he had been able to tour that distillery earlier in the week.

Good, real food

In September I started listening to the Dishing Up Nutrition podcast and learning more about food and nutrition.

I had really (really really) bad food poisoning in June 2008 and literally ever since then I’ve had spells of sickness that feel a lot like food poisoning but without any definitive cause. So! I’ve been learning more about what kind of food my body needs and paying attention to what we eat. I’m not on any specific diet, and I’ve always been a fan of vegetables and eaten reasonably well, but since September I’ve been paying even closer attention!

In the photo above you see my typical breakfast. I have been perfecting my fritatta recipe (actually, I’m not even sure it’s a officially a fritatta, but that’s what we call it).

Saute up about a cup of chopped fresh broccoli (vegetable) in a couple tablespoons of olive oil (good fat) and then pour over it 2 scrambled eggs (animal protein) and maybe some cheese. Allow to cook, then flip it and cook the other side.

I have no idea if I’ve lost weight or inches or anything …. but I FEEL healthier and I have been sick far far less often.

Home-buying

At the end of October we met with our realtor for the first time and started our house-hunt!

2011 is not necessarily the year that we BUY our house (still a lot of updates and details that we’re waiting on), but it is definitely the year that we begin our relationship with this realtor Bryan – of the Firehouse Team.

In the photo above is one side of his business card – even more symbolic because my good friend from high school did the marketing and design for the Firehouse Team, and he’s the one that recommended Bryan to us!

New-to-us car

In April Andrew’s car got stolen. Awesome, I know. He has TERRIBLE luck with cars … getting stolen (this was his 2nd), getting broken into, getting towed or catching on fire on the freeway.

So, we had to got to buy another car! My loving husband the saint that he is, he let ME get the “new” car and he took over the 2004 Chevy pickup truck that is starting to die. Bless him.

SO! We found a new-to-us 2006 Toyota Corolla with less than 50,000 miles on it! Yes! Now I have something to drive that won’t fall apart on me ….. Except. It smelled like the previous owner. Distinctly. Not necessarily B.O., but still …

In this photo is a car air freshner! Ha! We’ve since gotten the previous-owner-smell out of the car but we’re not taking any chances….

Andrew’s record label

Over the last several months Andrew has been in the process of starting his own record label!!

It’s crazy exciting! This is something he has dreamed about doing for years and years and years but never necessarily felt like it was something realistic he could accomplish.

Just in the last few days he was able to pick up the actual 7″ records that will be officially available in a few weeks! He and his friend had a ‘packing party’ this week to put together each record in a cover and a plastic sleeve getting ready to be mailed out soon!

In this photo you can see 1 side of the record cover and the record itself – put out by Ghostbot Records (and Lauren Records)! I am soo proud of him!!

Look for a post later today from Andrew about starting his record label

Love

Every year is full of love for Andrew and I….. I don’t want to rub anything in, but we are crazy happy together and every year our marriage just gets better! We’ve been friends since 1999, a couple since 2001 and married since 2005. … he’s the best.

He’s really too good for me.

Case in point? This photos is clearly of a cup of coffee, right? First of all, it’s in our wedding coffee mug! We gave out mugs with our wedding date on one side and this image (and our URL) on the other. Andrew was totally in charge of designing/ordering a hundred or so mugs for our wedding.

Also, every morning (literally EVERY morning), he gets up an hour or so before I do, makes the coffee and when I get up all I need to do is sit on the couch and he brings me my coffee perfectly prepped the way I like.

Proof that he loves me and is way too good for me :)

That’s our 2011 in objects!

What was part of your 2011??

For the love of the printed word

Taking a break from my normal fare today to let you know I’m guest posting over at A Snail’s Life in honor of National Library Week.

If you’ve been reading Lemon and Raspberry for any length of time, you are well acquainted with my love of books.

Someday I’ll be able to get all my books out of storage and then you’re not going to know what hit you!

Between books that I’ve had for years, and all the goodies I’ve been picking up at used book stores recently ….

Actually. Maybe it’s a good thing all my books are in storage :)

Over at Laura’s blog I’m writing about my love of books – not stories, even. Just BOOKS.

About my attachment to my Anne of Green Gables books ….

This is an idea that I explore in depth in my recent eBook Tell Its Story:

Every day you are choosing between things. Things to use, things to toss, things to ignore, things to put away. This is not just heavy-handed academic theory – material culture is part of your daily life. All of this stuff that is in your life every day – I’m talking about everything from your inherited quilt on your bed to your window curtains to the half-a-stick of butter sitting in
the fridge.

Or your books.

So please head on over to A Snail’s Life to read my guest post: For the Love of the Printed Word

Or check out Tell Its Story for more on the value of the things in your life …

Happy Friday! and Happy National Library Week!

reviews for Tell Its Story

my recent eBook – Tell Its Story: Journaling the Memories of your Stuff – has been out now for almost a full month …

I’ve gotten some honest, thoughtful and very valuable reviews from readers that I’d love to share with you!

From Maggie at Making Me Cranky :

So, why would I enjoy Tell Its Story so much? When really, it is about that “stuff” that I don’t have any emotional attachment to. Well, it’s exactly because of my lack of attachment. I found it to be a really interesting exercise in self-exploration. It made me really think about the very, very, very few things that I do save and have some sort of an attachment to, and why I don’t feel that way about most stuff.

From Alli at One Pearl Button (you can still enter to win a copy through Friday):

As an archaeologist, I make my living studying the material culture of other people; I use objects to reconstruct the lives of people who lived thousands of years ago.  Even though I spend most of my time thinking about the meaning of things, I rarely assign my things the same value. I love that Amy reminded me to remember the meaning behind the objects in my life.

For Mollie of Wild Olive, I contributed a guest post for her Family Week. This post is a partial excerpt from the book itself and talks about the value of the things we have that remind us of family members who have passed. (you can still enter to win a copy of the ebook here as well!). From Mollie on reading the eBook:

Let me start by saying that I really loved reading Tell Its Story. Not only does Amy share excellent ways to document places, things, and the memories that accompany them, but she also shares part of her own story and connects with the reader. As a person who finds great value in things because of the stories they hold, this ebook was right up my alley, and I can’t wait to start telling the stories that are a part of the things I love.

Mercedes at Miti Mota Textile is just excited to have won a copy!

I’m so excited…I can’t wait to read it! If you want to know more about Amy’s work please check out her blog…she is sooo unique and inspiring :D

Chelsea Lauren hosted a giveaway earlier in the month:

Let me tell you, I loved it, and I wanted to share it with all of you! I mean, who else is better to talk about the art of documenting stories than bloggers?!

Allie of Alexandra Rae Design also hosted a giveaway a few weeks ago. Her review was so enthusiastic!:

Ever since I heard that Amy wrote her masters thesis on the Horcruxes in Harry Potter. I knew that she would come up with something good, and boy, did she deliver. …I completely recommend that you check out “Tell Its Story.” It’s thought provoking, interesting, and makes you want to get in there and tell the story of your “stuff.”

Quite a few reactions from several readers…. I have been so delighted to hear that Tell Its Story is genuinely thought-provoking and has been challenging readers to re-think their relationship with their belongings.

making me happy

Just some mentions of Lemon and Raspberry and me around the web in the last few weeks …. Totally and completely making me happy ….

  • Moorea Seal: Sponsor Love
You might say I’m a *leeetle* bit in love with Moorea Seal. I think ‘girl crush’ is the operative phrase…. So last month, when she featured her sponsors and included me in her list of ‘Favorites,’ I think I died a little bit. And in the company of those other fabulous bloggers …. So many nice things that she didn’t have to say!  Happy ….
  • Nicole Ioma reviews Tell Its Story
Nicole and I have been online-friends for, what? a year? Since Indie Biz 2? I can’t keep track…. She’s amazing and so smart and talented and I love love love seeing new blog posts from her. So, obviously, I offered her a review copy of my latest ebook Tell Its Story. Fingers crossed it passed muster….. And what I got back is even more than I expected. Nicole *gets* it. She understands that blogging and telling our stories is MORE than just pretty inspiration pictures. This review for Tell Its Story she posted recently just made my week! (xo, Nicole) …. happy happy
  • Illuminession: In good company
I’ve also been following Carolina since Indie Biz 2 (I think)….. She is super smart, and not afraid to be introspective on her blog. You will not find fluffy re-post-WeHeartIt-because-its-pretty posts at Illuminession. Thank God for bloggers like Carolina! She recently posted about some things she’s been thinking about …. and gave me a little shout out. I SO appreciate that someone is noticing the hard work I’ve been doing, and that she thinks enough of what I’m doing to put me in company with Kyla and Moorea. Honored and flattered and so happy ….

What is making YOU happy this week?!

(also making me happy? This photo. Still. Taken by Jamie Delaine August 2010)
