a seed of inspiration: The Cosby Show

Some days I don’t want to think.

Some days I want to be productive and get work done without having to pull out the creative effort.

Those are the days I edit and back up photos while sitting on the couch watching TV.

(admit it, you do it too :) )

Those are the days that I load up our 5-disc DVD player or scour our Netflix Instant-watch queue for some “comfort” show that I can just run in the background while I do my work….

Lately, that comfort show has been The Cosby Show.

ALL the seasons of The Cosby Show are available to watch immediately via Netflix.

Get on that.

I didn’t watch a *whole lot* of television growing up (I know you’ll all be so surprised to know I was more of a reader) ….

But I definitely have memories of watching The Cosby Show when I was little …

There is something about that family that is so endearing.

I love that both parents were successful professionals – no stereotypical housewife there!

I love the chaos of the big family. Ever since I saw The Family Stone (good, not great movie), I’ve thought it would be fun to have a lot of kids. Both my parents are 1 of 6 kids and their childhood photos make it look like fun.

And then The Cosby Show just reinforces that.

I have a bit of a crush on Theo. And Malcolm Jamal Warner. Adorable boy.

The love and dynamics between Cliff and Claire 100% remind me of Andrew and myself.

I know, I know. Wishful thinking on my part?

But I kid you not …. The ridiculousness of Cliff? …. Every day with Andrew. The strictness of Claire?  …. um. Guilty. But also the always-present obvious love and respect between them? Clearly.

This TV show just makes me happy when I watch it …. and I’m so grateful there are so many seasons to keep me busy!

Some fun Cosby-show-related YouTube videos I would recommend:

Watching The Cosby Show plants a seed of inspiration to:

  • Be a good wife. Obviously. Claire is the best.
  • Have 5 kids. I know, crazy. But that big-family chaos seems more fun than stressful.
  • make my kids watch the show.
  • Meet Malcolm Jamal Warner.
  • learn Spanish (trivia: Bill Cosby mentioned that being a Spanish-speaker was on his wishlist for the woman cast as his wife. When Phylicia Rashad came in to read, they asked her about it and she spouted out a paragraph in Spanish. She’s fluent. LOVE it)
  • double check to make sure I own all the seasons on DVD. In the event it is no longer available on Netflix

I think if you add it to your queue, it will stay there until you remove it. At least that’s what my 16 yo tells me!

I always loved the Cosby Show too.

sometimes the Instant options are only available for a limited time due to licensing agreements. But, yes it would still stay in the queue for discs!

  • I grew up in a family of 6 kids. While I’m certainly not going to pretend like my childhood was horrible (it wasn’t!), I wouldn’t really say it was completely fun (for us, anyway… my mom had wanted a big family and she got one). Maybe it would have been different if our ages were distributed differently (we’re a blended/step family, and my older sister and brother are 7 months apart in age, as am I and one of my brothers… we were actually in the same grade at school). As little kids, it was fun & we certainly caused trouble (we’d gang up on other kids in the neighborhood). But as we got older, a lot of times there just wasn’t enough attention to go around (both of my parents worked). It’s more fun now that we’re all grown up (though we’re rarely all in the same place at the same time). But that’s just my experience! I think the most important thing about having a big family is to really *want* to be a mom. When I see moms with 4-5 kids hanging off of them and they look miserable, I wonder why they did that to themselves. But there are also moms who make parenting 5 young children fun and easy.

  • I LOVE the Cosby show. It’s on every morning twice between 7 and 8am, and has become part of my morning routine. Recently the one with Stevie Wonder was on. IT WAS SO AWESOME!!

I’ve been loving The Cosby Show this week as well.

  • I love the Cosby show too. From the time I started watching when I was really young, I always wanted to be like Claire Huxtible. Stern, but understanding; no-nonsense, but kinda sexy. I too feel like the relationship with me and my love are very much like Cliff and Claire.

  • Wow! I haven’t seen the Cosby show in years. YEARS! Like, more than 15 years! I must watch it now :)

  • One of my lifelong dreams has always been to meet Bill Cosby. I watch the show all the time, and I watch his old standup routine- Bill Cosby, Himself every chance I get. I thought I was the only one ;-) Favorite episode ever— the Thanksgiving one where Cliff has to keep going out in the rain :-P
