a seed of inspiration : Viggo Mortensen

I luuuuurrrrrrrrve him.

Yes. OK. I’m one of those super-cool people who went to the midnight showing of Lord of the Rings: Return of the King. And yes, ok, I am one of those super-cool people who HAVE watched the Lord of the Rings: Appendices approximately 47 times.

But still. Try not to judge :)

Completely (mostly) aside from that, here’s what I love about Viggo Mortensen : he is so much more than just an actor.

Have you SEEN his Wikipedia page?

In addition to being a well-known, talented actor Viggo also …

…. . speaks something like 5 languages. Brilliance. How good is your high school spanish? Cause mine? Not so good. And I live in Southern California.

…. he started a publishing company! Holy geez. So jealous. From Wikipedia: “With part of his earnings from The Lord of the Rings, Mortensen founded the Perceval Press publishing house — named for the knight from the legend of King Arthur — to help other artists by publishing works that might not find a home in more traditional publishing venues.”

Apparently he publicly complained that his movie schedule (filming Appaloosa) kept him from his publishing commitments.

…. he is a published writer and poet. I *think* even before he started his own publishing house.

…. he is a photographer. And a GOOD one from what I’ve seen. I’d love to get one of his books of poetry, but they appear to be only available used for exorbitant prices. So I’ll wait.

The Lord of the Rings: Appendices footage shows some of Viggo’s images taken during the production time of the movie. So amazing. …. I love that he still kept that part of him and continued making a completely different kind of art even while starring in the biggest film project anyone has ever completed.

…. he is a painter. Of course he is. What is he NOT?

… he is a musician. Actually, I think his CDs are his poetry read aloud mixed with instrumental from musicians he collaborates with…. but still – he’s exercising his creativity in that medium.

And here’s what I love about all this …. all of these not-acting projects that he’s completed are not just hobbies. Not, he’s an actor and plays guitar in his trailer. Not, he makes movies and writes poems in his journal.

Nope. Viggo Mortensen records his music and publishes his writing.

What on earth is holding ME back? My puny little day job is NOTHING compared to the commitments Viggo has as an actor.

I keep talking about the CD I’m going to record someday. What is stopping me?

P.S. On top of all this, he is also a great actor. I haven’t seen all Viggo‘s films, but I would recommend Eastern Promises and History of Violence … if you can handle violence. The Road is also excellent but a bit slow. Appaloosa is pretty good too.

Um. Also. Full disclosure: I have a SUPER HUGE crush on Viggo Mortensen.

But really, who can blame me?

watching/learning about Viggo Mortensen plants a seed of inspiration to:

  • get started on my ‘when I grow up‘ list
  • stay true to what I care about, whether it is commercial or not
  • brush up on my Spanish
  • finally record my CD
  • finally start my novel
  • watch LordoftheRings again (it’s been awhile) and his other films.

Yay! He’s my favorite, seriously! Viggo is like a modern day Renaissance Man. You’re not alone on the Lord of the Rings. The scene where he opens the doors in Helms Deep? I think I’ve rewound and played that part way too many times. That and the end when he kisses Arwen.

I’ve been saving up to buy all of his photography books. I did a shadow project on him in one of my high school photo classes, it was so fascinating to see a glimpse into how he thinks and such. I need to brush up on my Spanish as well! If anything to read some of his writing :)
